Performed via anterior (front) or posterior (back) approaches, it halts progression and stabilizes the spine. While effective, it sacrifices some flexibility and requires extended recovery.

Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT)

Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT) is a motion-preserving alternative for growing scoliosis patients, using a flexible cord along the spine’s convex side to guide asymmetric growth and gradually correct curvature. Unlike fusion, it allows natural spinal movement but requires precise patient selection (moderate curves, growth remaining).

Thoracoplasty or Rib Resection

Thoracoplasty (rib resection) corrects scoliosis-related rib hump deformities by removing segments of protruding ribs, enhancing cosmetic symmetry and occasionally improving spinal flexibility. Often paired with spinal fusion, it addresses severe rotational deformities but may impact lung function if extensive.

Hemivertebrae Excision

Hemivertebrae excision removes the malformed wedge-shaped vertebra in children to prevent progressive spinal deformity. Combined with fusion and instrumentation, it corrects congenital scoliosis early, allowing balanced growth. Though complex, it offers definitive treatment with low recurrence when performed before severe curvature develops.
